2008 Winner - Business of the Year Award
Tauranga Builders - Form NZ has taken out the top prize at the Westpac Tauranga Business Awards 2008
Form NZ, which has only been running for a year following the merger of Moyle Construction and Eaton Developments, won the Westpac Business of the Year award at Friday night’s (31 Oct 08) ceremony at Baypark.
Form NZ also won the manufacturing/distribution award, and was a finalist in the community service, workplace safety, and brand marketing and design categories.
Judges Comments
The judges found Form has a strong culture of leadership through empowering decision-making and feedback throughout the organisation. The business has formal vision and mission statements and shapes its business decisions around this vision.
Senior management consider staff to be the key to the long term success of the business. It encourages younger employees through the ranks to junior project manager roles, embeds the culture of the organisation through the continuity of staff.
The judges found Form have a strong understanding of their customer, their market segment, the importance of branding in their industry and of their referral networks. Form has developed a number of systems to improve quality and reduce risk for the business.
The firm is a member of the Master Builders Association and Shannon Moyle is the Vice President. Form also supports the industry through actively employing and supporting building apprentices.
Form NZ is a combination of two businesses Eaton Construction and Moyles, this was a carefully constructed and executed plan over 9 months and which symbolises the way the new owners of Form NZ operate their business. The combining of these two businesses was a method of future proofing their business giving it economies of scale and efficiencies within the industry.
In combining forces they have introduced new standards, systems and processes to which they adhere stringently. They have introduced a hierarchal system where you can enter at an apprentice level and grow through the company to craftsmen and onto project manager.
Their target market is top end residential and the commercial market and they have built their company around both of these profiles. However, they recognised a
niche in the building market and have developed systems and processes around the Leaky Home issue. Recognising this would become not just a case of repair but
litigation they have developed a process that details every step of the repair process.
The judges recognised Form as a very strong business model with strong leadership, strong financial health, while recognising a changing market and meeting it.
Strong Community involvement through the building sector and sports is very important to the Directors of Form. And most importantly they recognise their
success is a team effort.
